CAST-Sports Staff
Since coming to North Gwinnett three years ago, Bob Sphire has not backed away from a challenge. That was evident at the beginning of the 2008 season when the Bulldogs took on the nation’s No. 1 team – Byrnes (S.C.) -- as part of the Progressive Challenge to open the season. Despite a 36-21 loss to Byrnes, North Gwinnett again proved to be one of the top teams in the state.
Playing in one of the toughest regions in the state, the Bulldogs went on an eight-game winning streak and finished 10-3, advancing to the quarterfinals of the AAAAA state playoffs. Sphire, the CAST-Sports all-class 2008 Coach of the Year, managed the deep playoff run despite losing 10 of his 11 starters from the 2007 team.
“I’m very flattered and consider this a staff - award,” Sphire said. “I’m very blessed to have a great staff. And it also speaks to the quality of players we put on the field. We’ve been able to take the program to new heights.”
Sphire is 34-7 in three seasons at North Gwinnett. And while Sphire had high-profile quarterback Michael Tamburo at the helm on offense, the strides made by the defense made a big difference in the Bulldogs’ season. The Bulldogs allowed only one second-half touchdown during their eight-game win streak.
“That speaks to the kind of character and gumption our defensive players had,” Sphire said.
